GENERAL GODLEY OX COMMISSIONS. 'Special to "Star.")
WELLIXGTOX, this day. The Minister of Defence and General Godley have both received many communications from parents and friends of i soldiers at the front, urging the claims of these men to commissions. In a statement to your correspondent to-day Sir James Allen made it clear that these attempts to exercise personal influence have absolutely no weight or value. He quoted the following extract from : General Sir Alex. Godley's last letter from France: "With regard to the ap- | pointment of officers at the front I have made very careful inquiry, and find that, so far as I can gather, no appointments are made except upon the merits ', of the men. The principle of selection | aimed at is merit and suitability alone. ' The qualifications of any soldier are not j even considered unless and until he is j recommended for commissioned rank by : his commanding officer."
