The Waitemata County Council has fixed its rates for the ensuing year. It was resolved to strike the same rate, With the following exceptions:—Titirangi Riding: Five-sixteenths of one penny in the £. increase. Waikumete:Loan rate to be decreased by threeeighths of a penny in the pound. Pukeatua: General rate to be decreased by one farthing in the pound. Waipareixa: General rate to be increased by one farthing in the pound. Waitakere: Interest- rate to be increased by oneeighth of a penny in the pound A surprising position has occurred in connection .with, settlement of the cost of the Helensville swing bridge, which was formally opened in October, when the Helensville Town Board participated in the ceremony, having also, it is claimed, undertaken to pay half the cost of the erection of the bridge. The Waitemata County Council, at its monthly meeting on Friday received form the Under-Secretary of Public Works a copy of a letter forwarded to him by the Helensville Town Board, asking, that a, commission be set up to apportion the cost of the bridge, and nominating the Board's contribution as one-fourth of the total amount, £3,000. The Department required the Council's remarks on the communication. The latter body was emphatic upon the subject, and resolved to reply to the Under-Secretary that the Council is suing the Board for the amount it originally agreed to contribute. The lady supporters of the University Cricket Club again dispensed afternoon tea at Eden Park on Saturday, when the sum of £2 11/9 was taken in aid of the Victoria League's Patriotic _und Next Saturday the ladies from Ponsonby will supply the tea, and have charge of the arrangements.
