ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

TAIHAPE.—W. Barlow. It was something of a. coincidence that Toa Tere's victory in the Taranaki Cup was registered on the anniversary of his winning the Armadale Cup in Australia. The Lupin gelding Cardrona, which has been indulged in a short spell, has resumed work again at Ellerslie under the supervision of L." Morris. F. McManemin has decided not to persevere with the filly by Marble Arch — Latona, and she is to he'turned out, and will probably go to the stud next season. K. Heaton has taken Caber Feagh in hand again, and the son of Penury looks in nice condition to commence a preparation. Sylvan (Knight was given another lesson over the obstacles at Ellerslie on Thursday morning, his display being a satisfactory one for. a beginner. The victory of Carlysian in the Tele< phone Handicap at the Poverty Bay meeting was well anticipated, the son of FJysian starting an oddson favourite. J. CShea has ridden twelve winners within the fortnight, four at Takapuna, five at Egmont, one at Taumarunui, and two at New Plymouth. D. Maher, the famous jockey, who died in England recently, left property of the value of £5933 6/11, the net personality being £4958 1/7. Maher left the whole of his property to his wife. Mr. Morse bas given Form Up'every chance to earn distinction in open company, and with 7.9 in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui, is certain to be one of the favourites. Two of Auckland's best known totalisator workers, Messrs J. E. Cooke and W. Gray, leave for Sydney shortly under engagement to a syndicate operating in New South Wales. Reports of the running of the Taranaki Cup 6tate that the Auckland filly Waiuta finished absolutely last. Evidently the travelling did not agree with •her, for that is hardly her form. The restoration of H. Goldfinch's license was not discussed by the District Committee at their meeting on Thursday, and it will be another month before the matter will come before them again. Mr. A. Hill, caretaker of the Ellerslie racecourse, left for Rotorua this morning on a well-earned holiday. During bis, absence Mr. Tom Neave will be in charge of the tracks. The chief stipendiary steward, Mr. J. McMahon, was in attendance at the CJ.C. meeting on Saturday. It was at his instigation that the inquiry was held, which resulted in C. Emerson being suspended for two months. Although Lady Penury failed to notch a win she ran consistently at Taranaki, finishing third in both her engagements. The daughter of Penury has not had - a great deal of travelling, and with a Tough trip down may not have been at her best. Auckland's run in the Taranaki Cup was broken oft "Wednesday, when the best that could be credited to an Auckland representative was the third to Lady Penury. Auckland-owned horses in Self, Phosphorus, and Goldsize won in the three previous years. The following horses remain in the Jackson Stakes of 1917, to be run at Wanganui this month:—Bimeter, Rangitero, Wrestler, Hymenestra, Bisogne, Estland, Nystad, Cease Fire, Birkenvale, Carlatour, Arran, Signorella, b.f. by Elysian—Kowerewere, b.f. by Demosthenes —Pearl Shot. One of the most, pleasing successes to chronicle for some time is that of Signo in the Mimi Welter" on the opening day of the Taranaki J.C. meeting. Her; owner-trainer, J. Chaafe, jun., has had nothing but hard kicks from the Goddess of Luck for some time, and.no one. will begrudge him his change of fortune. Mr. Alison bas made a.good start on his Southern tour. Housewife about getting expenses when she won the Flying Handicap on the opening day of the Taranaki meeting. The defeats of Rockfield, which ran third in each of his engagements, were disappointing, while Thrace was twice unplaced. The team will at Woodville and Wanganui before returning to Auckland. The victory of Estland in the Taranaki Stakes gave his owner, Mr. T. H. Lowry, hie first win in the event, and incidentally marked the first success gained by the son of Finland. . The event has only been established three years, Sir George Clifford winning in 1915 with Flying Start, while last year Mr. G. D. Greenwood was successful with Emperador, his other representative, TSimeter, being second, a position he also filled on this occasion. Although there was not a great deal of merit in Estland's victory, for he was in receipt of about three stone from Bimeter, the colt H evidently coming on, and may develop into a useful three-year-old. J. O'Shea hae put up something in the nature of a record during the past fortnight, winning the Takapuna Cup on Merry Koe, the Egmont Cup on Egypt, and the Taranaki Cup on Toa Tere. O'Shea is the first horseman .to win the three events in the one year, although two other riders have the three races to their credit. S. Lindsay won the Takapuna Cup on Leorina in 1889, the Egmont Cup on Rosefeldt in 1894, and the Taranaki Cup on Castaabore in 1899, while K. Myers was successful in 1888 in the Egmont Cup on Dudu, and on Tamora-in the same year won the Taranaki Cup, being in the saddle when Doctor won the Takapuna Cup in 1900.

(HANDICAPPTNG BY YARDS.

The New Zealand Trotting AssociaI tion has notified clubs that in order to secure uniformity in the records, -all : handicaps must be reckoned on the basis of 12 yards to the second, and that the gross times, and also the net times must ibe recorded, J. "-- ".."_.'"

Both Greenetreet and Simbird, which won at 'New Plymouth, on Thursday, paid over the limit.

ROTORUA JOCKEY CLUUB.

Nominations for the Botorua Jockey Club meeting on the 23rd inst close tonight at 9 o'clock, either with the secretary, Mr. K. J. Rennie, Rotorua, or Mr. H. H. Hayr, Auckland.

TE AROHA JOCKEY CLUB.

Nominations for all events to be decided at the Te Aroha Jockey Club's annual meeting on March 3 and 5 close to-night at 9 o'clock. Nominations can ■be made either with the secretary, Mr. E. O. Nash, Te Aroha, or Mr. C. F. Mark, Auckland.

THE AUTUMN CLASSICS.

Although there is still a . couple of months to go to the Auckland land Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, interest is starting in the Autumn classics, the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, the Great Northern St. Leger, and the Great Northern Oaks. Thie year the fields in the -whole three of the events promise to be much above the average, and in each, there should be keen competition.

THE OAKS.

It can hardly be eaid that there is anything of outstanding merit engaged in the OaJos, unless Waiuta is given the palm, and the field in this event promises to foe a. record one. The >nost likely runners are: Errone'iiß} devotion, Oultriform, Sweet Tippc-ary .iiiamea, Rekanui, Sunny Climee, ~;r e Independence, Pourparler, Marabout. Waiuta, Tinkler, and Rose Pink. From this list a very even lot could be gathered, which -would make an interesting contest.

I THE CHAMPAGNE.

In tie Great Northern Champagne Stakes the probablee are: Agnestes, Demotic, Acre, Empire, Scottish Knight, Aetrophel, Biplane, Rathlin, Penthisilea, Birkenvale, Eetland, Mountjoy, Bagdad, Hymeneetra, Simonides, Trentham Rose, Vagabond, and Chuckle. A number of these are also engaged at Canterbury, notably Biplane, Estland, Birkenvale, Simonidee, Acre, Bagdad, Mountjoy, Hymeneetra, Vagabond, and Chuckle, where, in addition to the Champagne, they have also the Challenge Stakes to compete in. The- feet that Desert Gold is engaged in the latter event may have a big influence on owners' intentions, and therefore the Auckland event may benefit.

THE WANGANUI CUP.

Mr. Morse's.- adjustmente for the Wanganui Cup made their appearance yesterday. With. Bee engaged there was no doubt as to which would be top weight, and if at her -bait the daughter of Martian is not harshly treated with 9.0. Bunting, 8.10, hae been weighted up to hie best form. He won the Wellington Cup in good style under-7.9, andlolbe is a good rise with a quarter of a mile farther to go. Of those he beat in the Wellington Cup he meets Indigo lSlbs worse, Bjorneberg 151bs ■worse, Client 141bs worse, and Rangitero 61be woree. Colonel Soult at 8.9 or 21b more than he won with last year, is fairly treated, but Egypt, on the same mark, hae been made to pay the penalty for his Eginont victories, and is harshly; assessed. Depredation, 8.6, if back to hie-Auekland Gup form*-would be one t>f the favourites, while Rangitero, 8.2, has nothing to complain of. Indigo, 7.13, is one of the picks, and Client, 7.9, and Bjorneberg, 7.8, are also in their right places. Blackall, 7.8, is a possibility, and one or two of the lightweights have outside chances. Taken altogether it is a fairly good handicap, and a large acceptance should result. I ■

THE ST. LEGER.

The St. Leger fieU will to a large extent be influenced toy the actions of the Meeere. Stead Bros, in regard to Kilboy, Sasanof, and The Toff. The former ie still under a cloud, and therefore can be left out at present, while as both Saeanof and The Toff are at Biccarton their owners may elect to race there —if not in the Challenge Stakesj in the handicap events. Apart from this trio, Good Hope, Winterbourne, Wrestler, Petruchio, Eonn Up, Sweet Tipperary, Rekanui, Nystad, Sunny Climes, Ceaee Fire, Egypt, Beltane, Pourparler, Bjorneborg, Marabout, Wai■uta, Hyllue, Hyttus, Silvasco, Tabaeco, Paddington Green, -and Rose Pink are nominated, so that there is every material for a good field. If The Toff and Sasanof come North they -will add considerable interest to the gathering, for a duel -between the pair over the , St. Leger distance would create a lot of enthusiasm, while the likelihood of Egypt, Form Up, and Tabaeco also going out to oppose them would make for a race well worthy of the event.

' SASASTOFS CUP..

I That the victory of Saeanof in the Melbourne Cup still rankles in the minds of some Australians ie pretty evident from- the resolution passed by a body styling themselves .the 3T.S.W. Owners and Trainers' Association. This is to the effect that regulations should be framed compelling owners to give the last two performances with a horse's entry when it comes before a handicapper for the first time. The resolution was applied particularly to other States and NewZealand, and the advocates of the proposed rule specially state that Saeanof; would not have been handicapped at 6.11 in the Melbourne Cup if the handicapper had known that in one of his last two. performances he had captured the Hawke'e Bay Stakes, a weight-for-age race. - The above resolution comes as a bit of a surprise to most New Zealanders, for the general custom in Australia in the past has 'been to class our -weight-for-Kge form a long way below that of the other side, and, really, when the whole thing is analysed, what is found? In the.Hawke's Bay Stakes Sasanof "had 7.5, or 21b above ■his weight-for-age, and was in receipt of 131b from Hyttus, and 91b- from Bjorneborg, two of his own age which had the. penalties, and -which finished second and third, so that on the bare figures there was not altogether a great deal of merit in the victory. It may also be remarked that Mr. Henrys only put 7.1 on Bjorneborg in the New Zealand Cup. In the Melbourne Cup the son of Martian was assessed 91b -below weight-for-age, but •what about Shepherd's King, which ran second to (him? This horse, a six-year-old, was only given 7.7, or 271b under weight-for-age, and even though he -had to carry a penalty of 141b the handicapper had plenty of opportunities"* to gauge hie form. If a weight adjuster is to be guided by a hone's last two performance he might easily fall into a trap, and it eeems rather ridiculous to assert that the V.R.C. handicapper -was i not aware that Saeanof had won the Hawke'e Bay Stakes. All the leading Ausi tralian papers give results of the principal New Zealand races, and if an official in TOch a responsible position had -wanted the information it was easily available Evidently a New Zealand victory in euch a lace as the Melbourne Cup Jβ not a popular on* with some people. .'. „■

HAMILTON RACING CLUB. The acceptances received for the opening day's racing of the Hamilton Racing Club's annual meeting, which takes place at Oaudelands on Friday next, easily constitute a record, and the gathering promises to he the most successful yet held by the club. Within easy distance of Auckland, the fixture always attracts a large attendance from the City, and as a result partakes more of the charae-1 ter of a metropolitan than a country' meeting. Special trains from Auckland and to and from all parte of the district, have been arranged, fall particulars of which will be advertised later.
