DEALING WITH THE SUBMARINE SCOURGE.
MEANS POSSESSED TO SOLVE PROBLEM. ASMXRAX.TY HAS REASSURING EVIDENCE. LONDON, February 9. Naval circles are reticent regarding the submarine position, although they etate that the latest methods have proved highly effective. Many losses must be expected. The Allies now 'have in their possession means of destroying submarines, or rendering them ineffective, which will ultimately solve the problem. The public must not expect a speedy collapse of the menace, on which Germany has staked all. The Board of the Admiralty has dealt with several new schemes for destroying submarines recently, including one the details of which are closely guarded. It is announced that the experiments have shown the invention to be capable of performing all .the inventor claims. A prominent trade union official connected with engineering and shipbuilding raid:—"Germany has not altogether caught us napping. If the Admiralty gave some evidence of the results of the measures already taken it would prove of great value in reassuring the public. While this information is not forthcoming, the people must maintain quiet confidence.' . The Minister in Charge of Shipping Control states that arrangements ar« in progress for the construction of standardised merchantmen. He is not sparing efforts to utilise the nation's shipbuilding capacity to the utmost compatible with the needs.
