GERMANY STANDS TO LOSE

The shipping journal "Fairplay" says that by forcing' neutrals into the war arena Germany will defeat, her f> wn ends. At the outbreak of'the war 588 German steamers, of. a total tonnage of 2,408,450, took refuge in neutral ports. Of thesei 72, with: a tonnage of 553,689, . are in United States ports. The'entry of Porti tugal into the war reduced the total of I sheltering ships.by 71, with a tonnage of 231,798. If all, or. even part, of this tonnage is placed on the market the effect will be to considerably 'undo the work of the German submarines.
