FRENCH ATTACK ALONG A THREE-MILE FRONT

A French communique states:—"We attacked on a front of over three miles, between Berny-en-Santerre and Chaulnes, south of the Somme.' Our infantry carried the positions, and got past at certain points near the hamlet of Bovent. The outskirts northwards and westwards of Ablaincourt and the greater part of Chaulnes Wood were conquered.
