SOUTH OF THE SOMME
FURTHER FRENCH PROGRESS
1,300 PRISONERS TAKEN
ALLIED ADVANCE IN MACEDONIA
ANOTHER CRISIS IN GREECE
The French have resumed their interrupted offensive south of the Somme, and are advancing on a three-mile front. ' Between Santerre and Chaulnes they have cleared Berny and a , portion of both Chaulnes and Ablaincourt. The enemy's losses were severe, and included over 1,300 prisoners. The British have not attempted to renew their infantry attacks. Their trenches in the Neuville St. Vaast area were subjected to heavy - artillery-fire last night. The offensive in Greek Macedonia continues to progress satisfactorily. The British cavalry is within a couple of miles of Seres, while two more villages have been taken. On the other flank the Serbians continue to make satisfactory progress towards Monastir, capturing enemy trenches and taking nearly three thousand prisoners. - The American Government disclaims all liability concerning possible breaches of neutrality by the German submarines operating on the coast, and/refuses to subscribe to the Allies' doctrine that they are outlawed and excluded from the benefit ■ of international law governing the rights of warships in neutral •waters. The United States holds that the fighting nations must distinguish between neutral and belligerent submarines, and the responsibility for any resultant error must devolve on the Power which fails to so distinguish.
