COMMISSIONER CULLEN.

RETIREMENT FROM SERVICE.

It is announced that Mr. John Cullen, Commissioner of Police, retires from the public service on Xovember 23. His time for retirement on the a?e qualification was due in May last, but he was induced to carry on for another six months at the request of the Government.

Forty-seven years ago last May Mr Cullen joined the Royal Irish Constabulary as a lad of IS. In 1576 he came out to Xew Zealand and joined the armed constabulary. The year following be was appointed to regular police duty at Blenheim, and there got his sergeant's stripes. Dunedin, Timaru, and Christchurch were Mr Cullen's next stations, and in 1884 he -was promoted to the charge of tho Xapicr district. After spending seven years in Hawke's Bay, Mr Cullen took charge at Wanganui, and a few years later he went to the King Country to try and check the sly-grow selling which was freely carried on. Mr Cullen's work up to this time had been consistently good, and gained him tbe commendation of his superiors, but in the King Country he showed qualities of a special sort,"and he was shortly afterwards appointed an inspector. Greymouth was his first charge, and then be came up to Auckland in ISnS. Fourteen-years of excellent service was rendered by Mr Cullen in this district, and his appointment as Commissioner in 1012 was approved from one end of the colony to the other.
