AUCKLAND'S FISH MARKET.
BE.ETXRHS ON RIGHT SIDE. A BIG TRADE IX SIGHT. In answer to a question respecting •the financial position of the Auckland 3lunicipal Fish Market, the Mayor (Mr. j_ 2. Gunson) said this morning:—"The returns from the Auckland fish market are on the right side, and the quarterly returns will shortly be prepared. I am satisfied they will show that the business js; being run on very satisfactory linee. 0i course, the object is not to make profits, the primary object being to supply the public with cheap fish in abundant quantity, The Council has hardly ■yet settled down to the business. It ifi iow engaged in purchasing a second trawler, and it will probably be another six months before the business is really running on wheels. Xotwithstanding initial difficulties, however, of establishing and enlarging a business of this kind, the Public Services Committee have on the -whole done exceedingly well -with the ■venture. After the business is thoroughly established, and the committee lave an adequate idea as to what is required, and what the outgoings will "be, they may think it possible to stilll further reduce the price of fish to the public But in the meantime no alteration will be made in the present scale, and this applies also to other branches of the business where advantages to the public may be made later. The Council, working" with one vessel at the present time, renders conditions difficult, and it has not yet been able to supply the demand which has'set in from all over the province for fish. But with the enlargement of its einokehouse and the development of the supply which will be forthcoming with the advent of its second veeeel — -which will probably be larger than the Cowan—the Council will be able to meet not only the Email local traders' demands, which, unfortunately at present it has to turn down, but also th e large provincial trade that is awaiting development."
