Sergeant Robert Birnie, who was on J tbe staff of the Provident Life Assur-I ance Company at the Auckland office, but volunteered early in the war, is to bo the recipient of a handsome clock pre ' sented by the directors and staff. The, clock is in an oak case, and has a gold face, and beautiful chimes of the latest type. On a plate is the inscription thatj it is presented as a mark of esteem and appreciation of services rendered by Sergeant Birnie on four occasions, for which he was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal. Mr. A. O. Horspool, district manager, Auckland, will present the clock to Sergeant Birnie's father.
A meeting of the executive of the Carlton Bowling Club, held this morning, decided, in response to a general request issued by the Mayor, to close the winter green on Saturday afternoon next, so that members may participate in the farewell to be extended to the men or the Eighteenth Reinforcements, who are coming north for their final parade. James Shiels, grocer, of Hamilton, has been adjudicated a bankrupt on a creditor's petition.
