BULGARIAN RETREAT

FALLING BACK ON MONASTIR BRITISH EXTEND THEIR LINE SUBMARINES IN THE CHANNEL STUBBORN FIGHTING ON RUSSIAN FRONT The Serbians who recently defeated the Bulgars on the slopes of Mt. Kajmakalan have followed up their success by a - lightning blow which has liberated seven of their villages from the grasp of the invader and thrown the enemy back in hasty retreat upon a fortified defensive line in the Monastir sector. The Russians and French on the flanks have also assisted in the defeat. Further to the eastward the British have firmly consolidated the ground which they won across the Struma, and have further extended their gains. The Russo-Rumanian offensive in the Dobrudja continues. The Bulgars claim to have wiped out the Rumanian battalions which crossed- the Danube southward of Bucharest.

Communiques from the Somme front indicate that the consolidation of the recently-won positions is still proceeding. The artillery is having its innings, no attempts at infantryattacks having been made by either side. The Russians continue to keep up their pressure on the southern front, and stubborn fighting is reported from Vladimir Volynski to the Dniester. The Germans have made great preparations for the defence of Kovel and Lemberg.
