TWENTY-SECOND DRAFT.

PLENTY OF VACANCIES YET.

With only seven recruits accepted on Saturday, and sis to-day it is obvious that there is yet plenty of room for enlistments for the Twenty-second Draft, which is to leave Auckland next month. On Saturday, allowing fo_- defections, it was estimated that there would have to be about 150 enlistments of fit men if the new quota of the "o. 1 group, 405 men of all branches, is to be dispatched full. Towards this number seven men were accepted on Saturday and sis to-day, so that it is apparent that at this rate of enlistment the position will be none too sure. A large number of recruits who were' : acceptef prior to the advent of the new ' recruiting scheme attended the City Recruiting Station this morning to re- \ attest and take the oath. To each man a voucher for 5/ was given. AH recruits who have not talcen the oath are required to do so this week. Those whose first letter of the surname is between A and K. inclusive are requested to attend either to-nigbt or to-morrow, and those whose surname initial is later in the alphabet should re-attest sometime "Detween Wednesday and Friday.

OTAGO'S HOPELESS TASK. IN VOLUNTARY RECRU-TTNG. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. The military district is con- ; fronted with almost a hopeless task to [ avoid .the humiliation of a record shortage of recruits for the Twenty-second Reinforcements next week. Under the new boundaries, the Dunedin group, which formerly comprised practically the city alone, but now comprises in 1 addition the counties of the Peninsula, Waikouaiti, and Taieri, has been called iupon to find 262 men. This means that the total for the group has practically •been doubled, requirements hitherto on an average having been about 125Otago district has to find this time 552 men, or about 175 more than usual, a consequence of previous shortages. Those most intimately associated with voluntary recruiting candidly admit that, in existing, circumstances, their task is well night hopeless. The position is most serious as regards the Dunedin group, which has to maie good country shortages.
