WARNING TO WIVES
WHO GO TO WELLINGTON. TO BE NEAR THEIR HUSBANDS. ' "My committee is in agreement with yours in the matter of applying a check to the women who wish to go to Wellington, especially if they intend residing here only during their husband's service in camp." So ran a letter which was received at to-day's meeting of the executive of the Auckland Patriotic, and War Relief Association from the kindred association in Wellington. ■ The case was mentioned of an Auckland soldier who took his wife and five children to Wellington on a Saturday on which troops were parading the streets, and wanted the assistance of the association in finding accommodation for them, a task of considerable difficulty , with every hotel and boardinghouse filled with visitors. The family of seven i slept on the floor in ono room in the city having taken a house attached to a shop in one of the poorest streets, and paid in advance one week's rent (18/), but being unable to take possession as they had no furniture. The Wellington committee granted financial assistance. "I have been directed," wrote the secretary, "to ask you if you would be good enough to hring under the notice lof the public of Auckland that it is inadrisafble *hat' women should accompany their husbands to Wellington. You cannot paint too bad a picture; as without exaggeration. I can safely say that there are at least. 25 to 30 applicants waiting to. seize the .first empty cottage in the city. The summer is practically ion us, and seaside cottages, which could, be obtained for 10/ .per week a month 'or two ago, vrill now be eagerly sought at £2. Women from Christchuroh also have a tendency to visit the Capital (City, and I have warned the Christchurch Society accordingly. Your committee's action in refusing to enable i'women to go to Wellington to stay while their husbands are in camp is j highly commended."
