ONEHtTNGA. The meeting of the Onehuuga Borough Council held last night wae presided OTer by the Mayor (Mr J. Rowe), and attended oy all the meHToers except Mr W. W. Warnoek. Tenders.—The following tenders -were received for water extension purposes, luciuding the supply or pipes, etc.:— Messrs A. and 'I. i>urt, f3lo 3/1; John Burns and Co.. ex store and local i 274 11/6, British £333 11/t>; Briscoe ana Co., Ltd. (accepted), ££ju. ~ Tramway Matters.—Mr U. The Zoo.—A complaint was received from Mr J. :H. Colby that the ocean waves at the Onehunga Zoo were a nuisance on Sunday afternoons, and deprived people in the vicinity of rest and quietness. He asked that Mr Boyd be prevented from opening bis zoo on Sundays.—Referred to the Council-in-committee. . It was decided that no permits be granted to Mr Boyd, of the zoo, for the erection of more rages. It -was further resolven to ask the borough solicitor to report the costs of the zoo case, and also that the by-law re zoo be referred back to them for their opinion to what would be the "wordier of a valid by-law. Mr Brewin recorded his vote against the resolutions. Hospital Reserve. —The Hospital and ■C&aritable Aid Board desires the Council to take into the "borough a hospital reserve containing 14 acres at the Royal Oak corner, provided that the drainage area is extended to inrSnde this property.—Referred to committee. Firebell.—Mr Brewin moved -that a new firebell be placed in the Domain, in place of the present one. which is considered too smail. The motion was lost. Seddon Memorial.—lt was agreed, on the mojion of the Mayor, to repair the 6eddon Memorial, and to place an inscription to the late Sir G. M. O'Rorke in one of the bays at the Memorial. MEW LYNN. The Seal meeting of the Xew Lynn Town Board prior to the next election took place last evening at the Board's offices. Mr. A. Grandison, chairman, presided, and there were also present: Messrs. C. Gardner, F. Thorn, A. Sea brook, H. Cutler, and Geo. Lawson. Gardner Street East.—The engineer reported that he had inspected tne above street, and found that the surface water Bows down IronT Astley Avenue 'and the newly-formed portion •of .Gardner Street. Krosion had taken place in the water-table opposite Mrs. Jeffries , property. The surface water should have been diverted to the natural water-course on the opposite sice when the road was constructed. This Mould have necessitated the installation of about two chains of 12in pipes. The water tables had been put to a severe test during tlic recent heavy rain, and as there was practically no vehicular traffic using the affected part of the road, he advised the Board to postpone any expenditure in mis part until the loan works were proceedeil with in Hetana Hamlet. The Board agreed to the engineer's recommendation. Hetana Hamlet Loan Money.—The Board has been patiently the necessary Public -Works Department's authority for the spending of the remainder of this loan, and in order to facilitate matters the chairman forwarded the following letter to Wellington on July 28:—"My Board was very much surprised to learn to-day that, upon calling at the Public Works Department in Auckland, no authority has been granted for the expenditure of the giant of £500 for roads in Hetana Hamlet. Arrangements have beeu made for the expenditure of £1300 on the roads, and plans', specifications and estimates are now reauy. These roads are iv their virgin state, and are quite inaccessible for settlement. It is hoped you will use_your best endeavours to expedite the matter by forwarding the authority to Auckland, permitting the Board to proceed with these urgent works." The Department, iv acknowledging tile above, states that the District Engineer reported that the Board had not submitted any proposals for tlie expenditure of the balance of this vote. "So.tar as concerns the expenditure-of the present unauthorised balance of the vote, namely, £490 19/6, £■ for £, it does not appear that thi9 work is or an urgent uatnre, and under present conditions the Minister regrets he is unable to authorise any grants, except those for works which are urgently required.' l ' Dissatisfaction was expressed by the Board, and the chairman was requested ■to take further action. Lighting the Railway Station.;— Amongst a number of railway matters that were discussed, the lighting up of the station and the level crossiugs within the Board's district were referred to. It was agreed to approach the Railway Department, asking them to improve the lighting' at the station, and requesting that alarm bells be installed at t.be level crossings, especially" the one ou Titirangi Road, which ia considered by the Board to be very dangerous. Belgian Fund. — A letter was received from the Belgian Consul, asking the hoard to support the "Egg Week" scheme in aid. of the above fund, the idea being' to ask for donations of .eggs during the second week of October, when eegs are plentiful. These will be stored in Auckland and sold next Easter, when eggs arc dear.— Referred to the new Board. Rata Street.—A letter was received from Mr. J. Cotterill, ottering to defray the : expense of some filling on this street which would enable him to erect his fence and improve the drainage of his property The offer was accepted, and the Board's contractor requested to do the work as coon as possible. The Election.—A letter was received from the returning officer, in reply to the Board's application for the. election to be used ou a Saturday, stating that this request could uot be acceded to. and that the election was fixed lor the 20th inst. Tbanks. — The chairman thanked the members of the Board for their support and for sympathy shown to .him durinc his recent illness.
