DOBRIC RECAPTURED

BULOAiIS EVACUATE VARNA s BRITISH ADVANCE ON THE STRUMA ENEMY COUNTER-ATTACKS ON SOMNIE FAIL The Rumanians, assisted by the Russians, have succeeded not only in holding up the Bulgarian attack on the right wing, but in compelling the evacuation of Dobric, the terminus of the railway running northwards from Varna into the Dobrudja. They have also forced the evacuation. of Varna by heavily bombarding it from_the sea, while the Russians, marching along the railway, took it in the rear. Threatened from both sides, the Bulgars have withdrawn from the port, which will come in very useful for the Russians as a provisioning base for their flanking army. The enemy brought up heavy guns and pounded the Silistria forts to atoms, compelling the garrison to evacuate the town, but they have apparently made no progress in the Turtukai sector. The British have repulsed further 4 counter-attacks at Ginchy. and have also raided the enemy trenches further to the north. The French successfully resisted five attacks, in some of which flame-throwers were used, on their new line south of the Somme. Heavy fighting is reported from the Struma front, in Eastern Macedonia, where the British crossed the river and attacked the Bulgarians, who are fiercely defending. Along the Doiran front the Bui gar advance posts have been heavily shelled. v The Russians are slowly closing in upon Halicz, swinging forward- in a semi-circle as they did at Lemberg, when they so successfully burst through the Austrian line. The capture of Halicz will have a very important effect on the whole Eastern campaign.
