3 CAREERS OF THE FAIXEH. g SAPPER THOMAS SULLIVAN. ~ Sapper Thomas Sullivan, who bae died 3 from wounds, was one of Auckland's f leading Association football players. He t has three brothers at the front. Sapper y Sullivan is the great gTandson of the p late Admiral James Tonkin, R.N., andi c nephew of Captain James Tonkin RN ~ His grandfather fought through ttre y Crimean War. About sixty members of .. his father's and mother's families are ~ at the front. c - t PRIVATE A. S. SING. ~> Particulaiß of the death of Private - Albert Stanley Sing, who was killed in - action in France on July 3, have been - received by hie mother, Mrs. F. Smith, of 1 Browning Street, Grey Lynn, in a letter f from another son, Private Arthur Sing. • The latter, who wae about a mile dia- ; tant at the time, states that his brother t was killed during the worst bombardt nient experienced in that part of the s line since the New Zealand troops ar--1 rived. iHe wae working a trench tele- ■ phone, and had .the receiver strapped to ; I/is head when he was killed. He wae buried with his particular cham, who was killed beside him, in a military cemei tery near a large town in rear, ot the line. His brother mentions having secured a promise from a young , Frenoh girl who had been good to them thai she would keep the two graves in order for him. "She is like a mother to us," he j adds simply, "but she is very young , . ,, ! j Mrs. Smith lias also received a note, Ifrom Chaplain-Captain Richards (Roman, Catholic), who conducted the burial eer-J vice.
