FIGHT FOR THE SILVER COOK. PONSONBY TAKES REVENGE. * MERITED WIN FROM SHORE. NEWTON WIN AND GRAFTON , DEFAULT. The preliminary round of the knock-out competition for Koope's Rooster was played on Victoria I'ark on Saturday afternoon before about 3,000 spectators, Graftou Athletic, unable to raise a team, defaulted to City ltovers, and North Snore Albion and Otahuhu were eliminated by tbe respective victories of Ponsonby United and Newton Rangers. With two fairly solid defeats by North Shore in the main competition to atone for, Ponsonby tbrew tbe full force of their reserves into the combat on the main pitch. Although the game never attained a classical standard, it was characterised by a hot, willing pace throughout, Ponsonby enjoying the lion's share of the initiative. Poneonby defeated North Shore by 8 polnte to 2, after an even contest. For Ponsonby, Martin scored two tries, one of which Winters converted; while for North Shore, Paul kicked a penalty goal. NEWTON'S EASY TASK. Newton had an easy Job against Otahuhu finishing up winners by 22 points to 8 Foi Newton Isles (2), Thomas (2), lovett ana Jennet"' scored tries, Castles and Potler converting one each. For Otahuhu, Spinley aud Farrelly got tries, Stannaway converting one. THIRD GRADE. CITY V. NEWTON. Won by City by 11 points to 2. Rae U) and Kanimel scored tries for City. MoUoj kicked a goal. Brown kicked a penalty goal for Newton. RICHMOND A. V. SUNNYSIDE. Richmond won by 12 to nil. Clokes and Edwards each scored tries, and Cloke kicked three goals. FOURTH GRADE. CITY ROVERS V. OTAHTJHU. This match was a draw—no score. NORTHCOTE V. PONSONBY. Northcote won by 13 points to 5. NORTH SHORE V. NEWTON. North Shore won by 5 points to 3. Cpsgrove scored a try, and kicked a penalty goal for North Shore. Murphy scored a try for Newton. FIFTH GRADE. MANUKAU T. POST AND TELEGRAPH. Manuk&u won by 14 to 7. NORTH SHORE V. CITY. North Shore beat City by ten points to nil Scorers:' W. Probert and S. Boyer. McDonald kicked two goals. SIXTH GRADE. OTV V. MANUKAU. Won by City by 15 points to 5. The Association competitions were continued on Saturday, when V.M.C.a. were easily beaten by North Shore by 7 goals to 3, and Richmond defeated Evertoa by l goal to 0. NORTH SHORE WIN EASILY.
