DARDANELLES DISPATCH.
AN IMPORTANT CORRECTION. WORK OF THE IST N..Z. BATTERY. A very important correction of Sir lan Hamilton's dispatch regarding the Dardanelles operations appeared in the London ''Gazette" of March of this year. In the original, the 2nd New Zealand Battery, under Major Sykes, is quoted as having defeated several Turkish onslaughts on Lone Pine Ridge. As a matter of fact, it was the Ist New Zealand Battery, under Major McUilp. that accomplished this work. Referring to the memorable assault and capture of Lone Pine, the corrected dispatch states: —"Owing to the rapid accurate fire of the Ist New Zealand Battery, under Major McGilp. several of the Turkish onslaughts were altogether defeated in their attempts to get to grips with the Australians. Not a chance was lost by these gunners, although time and again the enemy's artillery made direct hits on their shields." The Ist New Zealand Battery was the only New Zealand Battery mentioned in the dispatches.
