BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Blrkenhead Borough .Council was neld last nleht to deal with a notice of motion striking the rates for the current year. The Mayor (Mr Jaa. P. iMcPholl). presided: and I'ouiicfflors Colin Maaon. Robert Webb, K. G. Skeates, F. .1. Stewart, Albert Badfleld, J. L Leonard and €. E. Campbell were also present. The motion striking the rates in accordance with the notice given was carried, the total amounting to 3Jd in the pound on the annual value, viz.:—A general rste of 1 46-ftid In the pound, a "hospital and charitable aid rate of '19-64 din the t-onnd, and special rates to be collected, l}d in the pound. Last year's water charges were adhered to. viz., }d in the pound for consumers, with a minimum charge of 10/ per annum, and gd in the pound for non-con-sumers, •with a minimum charge of 5/ per annum. ' Cotm-cillors Stewart, Skeates and Mason endeavoured to alter the method of levying the rates to a total of 3Jd in the pound, -with the additiou of a separate rate for sanitation to be paid by the users of the service, but tbe original proposal to utilise the general fund for ail work in connection with the sanitation of the borough was carried, the total rates being increased t>7 jd (viz., to 3|d). to allow of this being done..
