BOYS AT THE FRONT

BERKEIvHEAD AND NORTHCOTE COMRADES. In a recent letter Private George Hall, of Birkenhead, who paid the' great sacrifice for his country at the front this month, wrote:—"You- would be amazed at the number of chaps here that one knew in Auckland. In the First Brigade there are 'Bunny' Tyer, of Northcote; Gordon Mincher. of Xorthcote; Charlie Couch, of Birkenhead; Frank Warrington ; Bert Dingley, of Birkenhead;' Julian Brook,, of Birkdaie; 'Billy* Carnahan, of Birkdale; Frank Wilson, the Ponsonby cricketer; and dozens of others I could name if I had the time and space, bat I have now to go on guard duty. Wnue in. camp at Ismaili* we had some first-class Rugby football matchesgames between platoons, companies and battalions. Wellington won the championship, beating the Maoris, who were runners-up, by three to ml, after a magnificent, though somewhat dirty, game. The Maoris had such well-known men as Jack Hall, Kaipara and French plaYm" for them, too, but Wellington were too hot.' They had five New Zealand Teps in their team, including Teddy Roberts and Billy Wilson (Rangife brother)." Writing subsequently, Private G. Hall , said:—"We are billeted here on farms well within sound of the guns, and at night we see plenty of star shells goin<j '?& J° m F oTrest > of Birkenhead, Fred ■Wheeler, of GHenfield (since killed) and i myself are all in good nick."
