"THE LADY BURGLAR."

CAUGHT AT MIDNIGHT. ; -'■■': BBK.VFrmg txto b'oardixghouse.

h ■ As a climax to a series of thefts which lave been taking place recently among 1 boardirighouses at the lower end of

Symonds Street and other places, a

woman named Jessie Jacobs (37) was i caught after midnight last night redhanded in the act of entering Braemar

loardinghouse in Eden Street. Plainclothes Constable Trotter and a companion, in consequence of complaints of those thefts, were on the watch last ; njght, and abont half-an-hour after midnight they noticed some person stealthily making way along a water-pipe running along the wall of Braemar House. This acrobatic feat was rendered possible that there was a space of only about 3ft j tween the wall of Braemar House and the wall of the next-door boardinghouse. The apparent burglar worked along the pipe to the roof of the verandah of Braemar House, opened an upstairs window, and disappeared. Constable Trotter then came from hiding, and also climbed on the verandah, and through the win.dovr. When he got inside he found the accused woman in the kitchen. She had lit a candle, "stuck it In the sugar bowl, and had a cloth spread on the table, apparently in which to place any possible loot. At first the woman seemingly misjtpok the plain-elothesman for a fellowcraftsman, for she cautioned him against making a noise and awaking the household, but was very much surprised when informed that he was a policeman, and 'that Ehe was tfnder arrest. The woman at the time had no boots on. This morning the woman was brought Before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., on a charge of breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime, and she was re/manded for a week, Sub-Inspector- llcIlveney remarking that it was probable that a number of other charges would probably be preferred against the accused.
