AUSTRIANS TRAPPED ON CHARTORYSK FRONT

MOWN DOWN BY CANNON AND HARASSED BY CAVALRY. INTENSE PANIC CAUSED IN THEIR RANKS. VALUABLE STRATEGIC POSITIONS OCCUPIED BY RUSSIANS. (Received 10.50 a.m.) . . PAKE, July I*. yi. Naudeau, the Russian correspondent of the Paris "Journal," states that stirring details are to hand' from the Chartorysk-Rafalovka front, south pf the Pripet. When the Austro-Germans were hemmed in on three sides they decided to retreat. There remained only one loophole for escape, a narrow passage 18 versts (11 miles) in extent, into which they rushed. The Russians cannonaded them from the north and south, and the cavalry harassed and sabred them mercilessly in the rear. The panic was so intense that we occupied a valuable strategic position which long seemed impregnable.
