LAWN TENNIS.
The championships were played at Palmerston North, and again attracted the leading players from all over the colony. Hooper, Peacock, Fisher, J. M. Marshall, and Cox, the holder, weTe all competing. Some of the very best exhibitions of the game were given- Cox was beaten by Peacock in the second round after a four-eet match. Peacock and Fisher had a tremendous five-set struggle, the former winning with only one game to his credit, the sets being 3—a, 10—8, B—B, 4—6, 10—8. Hooper was the ultimate -winner, putting Peacock out in three etraight sets, two of which, however, were 'vantage. The interests in the ladies' events showed a great improvement this year. singles was won by Miss Simpson, of the Linwood Club, but she succumbed to Mies Nunneley in the challenge round. Misses Nunneley and Hannan won the ladies' doubles, and Messrs. Collins and Cox the men's doubles. Canterbury's success enabled the name of the province to be the first inscribed on the banner presented by Mr. H. M. Gore, of Wellington, the points being Canterbury 15, Auckland 6.
