CAREERS OF THE FALLEN. THE LATE LIEUTENANT JENNINGS. A eword of the best Damascns steel, [ ~with two jewels in the handle, has been received i>y Mr. W. T. Jenning3, ILP. for Taumarunui, from the High Commissioner, being the present of the people of Buenos Aires to his late son, Lieut. H. W. Jennings of the Royal Field ' Artillery, who died in February last from wounds received five months earlier during the fighting at Looe. for three years prior to the outbreak of the war, the late Lieut. Jennings was in the service of the British Bank of South America at Buenos Aires. On the occasion of his death the board of directors in London expressed their deep regret at his loss, and conveyed their sympathy Ito his parents and relatives. A copy iof this resolution aleo came to hand by the last English mail. A German helmet and an iron cross, which the late officer found m a German trench at Loos, have been received by Mr. Jennings. CORP. J. A. GODFREY. i Corporal James Alfred Godfrey, who ' was wounded for the second time and > admitted to hospital on June 26, is 29 ; years of age, and was born in Picton, ' Marfborough. His parents, the head of ' a well known family in that district, ■ died some years ago. Corp. Godfrey was 1 popularly known in sporting circles in ' the South, having been captain of the ' Picton Rowing Club and a member of ' various football and cricket clubs. On several occasions he represented Marl- ' borough in these games. Prior to his de- ' parture for the front he was on the staff ' of the Railway Department, and when ' he was transferred from Picton to Westport he enlisted with the Main Body. ' jHe was at the landing of the New Zea- : I landers at Gallipoli, and was wounded ] on May 31, 1915. He returned to the ' Peninsula and remained there until the ! withdrawal of the troops. Corp. Godfrey has a brother at the front, and another brother, Mr. J. A. Godfrey, is in the Sur- : vey Office, Auckland. PRIVATE GEORGE HALL. Private George Hall, who died on the 4th inst. from wounds received recently in action, was the youngest son of Mr. John Hall, of Onewa Road, Birkenhead. He left with the Eighth Reinforcements in the Third Auckland Infantry Battalion. He was 20 years of age, was educated at the Glenfield and Northeote schools, and followed the vocation of an ironworker under his father in the firm of Hall Bros., of Drake Street, Freeman's Bay. After arriving at Egypt, he wae at Ismadlia for a while, and served temporarily in the transport service, subsequently being returned to the infantry, and leaving for the firing-line. In a recent letter he stated that after reaching Marseilles, they were conveyed by train! for about eixty hours through France before reaching their destination. They then billeted at a farm some fifteen to twenty milee from the firjng-line, to which he expected to be sent a few dayei afterwards. Several Birkenhead ""boys" jrere together with him.

WUWKAL J. E. DAVIDSON. Corporal James EdwaTd Davidson, reported as having been wounded in the left arm on June 22, is a eon of Mre. C. Davidson, of Maangaturoto, and was engaged before the war as a farmer. CORPORAL N. P. BRINSDEN. Corporal Norman Pcrcival Brinsden. who is reported as haying beon wounded on June 29, is a son of Mr. F. W. Brinsden, a member of the Auckland City Council. Corporal Brineden was woil known in Auckland prior to his departure on active service through his interest in sport. He represented Ponsonby at lac-rosso, and ac a prominent mcr.iber of the Ponsonby senior cricket tor-rn. 1 was one of the most promising colik in Auckland. Immediately before going' into camp lie made a tVntury for" hie club, and ho. was responsible for several I other large scores during the past eeason. He left Xew Zealand in Novembes last. PRIVATE C. DAKING. Private Cyril Dak ins, reported to have died of wounds on July 3, was one of the principals of the firm of Messrs. House and Daking, of Hamilton. He was a single man, 31 years of age, and was born in Suffolk, England, where hia people still reside. In company with hid partner, Mr. F. C. House, he came out to New Zealand ten years ago, entering the employ of Smith and Caughey, Ltd. Eight years ago, in conjunction with his partner, he commenced business atj Waihi, and later at Hamilton and Te Awamutii. When war broke out he enlisted at Hamilton. For the past fivoj years lie managed the branch at Te Awaniutu, in which district he was best known. He was a young man with a very promising future, being keen in business and of the greatest integrity.
