THE POSITION ON THE EASTERN FRONT.

HUNDRED-MILE BATTLEFRONT ON THE STOKHOD. CTVE ADDITIONAL ARMY CORPS BROUGHT UP BY ENEKT. OBSTINATE DEFENCE OFFERED IN NORTHERN AREA. (Received 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, July 13. The "Daily Telegraph's" Petrograd correspondent sends the staff's explanatory statement regarding the situation on the Stokhod. The battle front stretches for a hundred miles, mostly coinciding with the valley of the Stokhod. Both banks of the river* between the two railways converging on Kovel are in Russian hands. Further north the Germans in some places retain the eastern bank. There are indications that five additional German corps have been deployed on the Stokhod, of which three are from France and the remainder from other parts of the Russian front. The fight for Baranovitch covers a front of 30 or 40 miles. The Russians are firmly established on the newly-won ground, but progress is retarded by the strength of the enemy's lines and the obstinacy of the defence. The Russians hold a position within six miles of the railway junction, which strategically is of almost equal importance to Kovel.
