NORTH SEA BATTLE — THE LAST STAGE.
The above plan, which was prepared by* the Rev. W. G. Monckton, MJL, in consultation with a naval officer, shows the final stage of the battle in the North Sea on Hay 31st. The British had manoeuvred so as to get on three sides of the Germans, but in the mist and failing light the Germans escaped. The plan was drawn up from the dispatches, and is necessarily only approximate. "Hood" represents the remains of the Third Battle-cruiser Squadron," the Commander himself having perished in the Invincible. Leading to this phase were a number of other stages showing many changes in course. At first Admirals Beatty and Evan-Thoma • were steaming east. Then, when they got into contact with the German battle-cruieers they went south-east, Hood and Jellicoe being a long distance away. When .the Germans effected a junction with their battleships they turned north, and Beatty and Thomas followed suit. It was at the turn that the Queen Mary was sunk. The positions were now reversed, Beatty leading- the enemy in the dire ction of the British battleships. Wh en these appeared on the scene the Germans again turned to the east and then to the south-west. Hood had worked - round between the Germans and Denmark, placing himself in front of Beatty, and, by .masterly manoeuvring, Jellicoe and Evan-Thomas took -up the petition* indicated in the plan. The German fleet, it will be observed, had been so completely envelooed ~-* js «-= fla aahJßg pgld hyaj?jg«St^-ai-<hiJßgtio J l.if thiLliflt fe&JMOd. for a. few. ]*<£• longer, '
