TOWN CLERKSHIP.

APPOINTMENT TO BE FIIXED ? SALARY £1250 A YEAR. FURTHER INFORMATION PREMATURE. An- interesting position in regard to ■ flic Aiickland Town Clerkship has now been, arrived at, and, judging by a special report -which, came before the City Council last evening from the special committee which hue in hand the task of giving effect to the recommendations of the report recently made by Mr. Anderson, of Sydney, the possible filling of the position at an early date is foreshadowed. The committee tersely, recommended, "That the Council now consider-the question of the practicability of making a suitable appointment." Council thereupon went into commit-, tee to consider the report and a supplementary statement from the Mayor (Mr. J. H. Girnson), who is chairman of• the committee. COMMITTEE ADJOURKED. Interviewed by a "Star" reporter today, the Mayor stated that the effect of the report was that the committee had carefully considered the position in regard to the Town Clerkship, and now required the Council to decide what -action- should be taken. The matter was still under- consideration by committee, and the discussion had been adjourned until Wednesday afternoon next. "The importance of the matter requires that it shall be given the most serious attention by the Council," stated the Mayor. "It will be recollected that the Council, from fifty applications made in response to the advertisements, was not satisfied to make any- appointment, and the position- in- connection with the Town Hall staff is now such that in fairness to the Council's interests and the staff some definite position shall be arrived at. The Council is now being asked .'to determine whal course is practicable." • . 9 "In this matter, - as in all matters of a personal character in connection with the Corporation's business, negotiations are necessary," added the Mayor, "and any announcement at this stage, seeing that nothing whatever has been done, ■would ibe quite premature. The terms advertised, namely, a salary of £1250 per anumn, and other requirements, will be the main conditions of any appointment that would be made should the Council decide to take action. The prime" requirement is that the interests of the; Corporation and ratepayers shall be advanced." \
