A STARTLING INCIDENT.
There was a rather startling occurrence in Karangahape Road, Newton. la6t evening, about 8 p.m., when the thoroughfare is crowded. The report of a rifle was heard, and a l>ull?t from a .303 Tifle crashed through the pi it s glass window of the shop of Mr. Waiuo, grocer, on the corner of West Street and the main Xewfcon thoroughfare. The bullet had apparently travelled right acros.thc road in a flight sufficiently low to have found a. billet had somaone beer, passing at the moment, and investigations showed that the rifle li.iJ be-»n fired from a cellar across the roa;i by a soldier. The police aie satuiiid that the affair was an accident. It is believed that while the gun was being examined it went o."I, aud the iv:iie:i->t of the bullet carried it across the road.
