THE CITY AS IT LOOKS 'AFTER THE REBELLION, Between -the Nelson Pillar and the O'-Ccmnell Bridge only a few blackened walls of the once famous buildings are to be aeen, if -we except the shell of Clery's warehouse. V)n the other side only the outer walls and portico of the Post Office > remain. ■ ! The Hotel iletropole has gone, and the "Freeman's Journal" office behind is in ruins, pieces of broken .printing machines' penetrating from the debris. Mast of the other business premises from- here down to I the O'Connell Bridge are either wholly or partially destroyed. Here and there one sees a tramcar burnt down to the iron -wheels. The overbead wires are twisted and contorted into all sorts of enrioos eha-pes; lamp-stan-chions are bnllet-d«nted, scorched, and twisted: whilst In certain parts the bricks from the demolished buildings are ecattered across the wide thoroughfare, only JeaTing a narrow passage for a jauntlagcar to pass. The T.iT.C.A., which was seized by the revolters, is a narrowfrented building, and this shows tie accaroey of the artillery flre directed agalast it, as the buildings on cither side have not been struck. Fortunately the statues are little the worse. On one or two *here is a bulletanark, and the figtrre of the "Liberator has been pierced in one or two places. Sacfcrille Street, the noblest •of - Irish thoroughfares, in ruins! Wnat that sight meant to some could only be conjectured, but to many it broogfct a tightening of the heartstrings as they realised for tbfv-first time that the buildings in which they had -worked for years tvere now in ruins. Still, the general feeling was that it -was nocesearr ■Dublin should thns suffer -in order that she might be cleansed.
