A first offender who had got drunk when rejected ac a soldier, and then hocame co ill that he had to be sent to the hospital, where he had been for a week, incurring expenses amounting to £2 10/6, was convicted and ordered to pay the expenses within the next six months. Two other first offenders were fined 5/ apiece. Alfred Barton (38) and Wβ. Farrou (48), for getting drunk for the second time within cix months, had each to paj 10/, or spend the week-end in gaol. Arthur Johnston (56), who had got drunk when prohibited, was fined 40/, in default seven days. Samuel E. Swinburne (23), who had torn a constable's trousers when the constable was arresting bim for drunkenness last night in Queen Street, wa« con victed and ordered to pay 25/ damages within a month. FAINTED IN THE DOCK. "One of the worst," commented the Sub-Inspector on Mamie Schmidt, alias Gorstad, alias Martin, alias Cullen (36), who admitted that she had been leading a vagrant life, and had been found soliciting in Hobson Street last nig-ht. BACK AGAIN. William Kirk (42), admitted that yesterday he stole an oilskin overcoat, vaiue 357, the property of James Tike, and a wringer, value 25/, the property of some person unknown. Sub-Inspector Mcllveney stated that yesterday a man left his overcoat in his cart while he went into the Britomart Hotel, and when he came out of the hotel the coat bad been stolen from the cart. Subsequently accused turned up at a second-hand dealer's shop with the overcoat and a wringer for sale, and was arrested. This was accused's fifty-fifth appearance in Court, and he had recently been in trouble when "out" on licence. Accused, \v.oo bad nothing to say, was sentenced tcT three months' bard labour.
