RUSSIA'S PROGRESS IN GALIGIA

ANOTHER SIX THOUSAND PRISONERS

FIERCE ATTACKS OH VERDUN

REPULSED WITH GREAT SLAUGHTER

BRITISH BOMBARDMENT 09NTINUES ENEMY HEAVILY REINFORCING . The Russians have captured Kolomea, an important junction to the westward of Czeraowitz, taking another six thousand prisoners, and increasing their tally to 211,000. A series of sudden and violent attacks on the northern front is interpreted to mean that yon Hindenburg has finally begun his offensive. _ Very great activity is reported from the French front. The snemy attacked- a salient near Nieuport, in Belgium, but was driven out by a counter-attack. At Roye, to the northward of Compiegne, a strong reconnaissance was smashed before it reached our trenches. The enemy vigorously renewed his offensive from Avocourt Wood to Hill 304, liquid flame being used in the attack. The French fire broke the attack, inflicting heavy losses. To the eastward of Hill 304 the enemy succeeded in gaining a small fortified work in the first line after the garrison had been literally buried by the bombardment, V but a counter-attack recovered the position.

Beports from behind the German lines indicate that the Germans are feverishly reinforcing on the British front, and that batteuies of big guns are being brought up to help defend £he positions. The fire of our guns has battered the first line out of existence at some points and heavily shelled the second and third line, doing great damage to the fortified positions of the enemy.
