PROGRESS IN THE CITY. THE PERSONAL CANVASS. FAILURE OF THE SCHEME. A report upon the progress of recruit ing in the city during the past week wai submitted to a meeting of the sub-corn I mittee of the City Recruiting Commit tec yesterday afternoon by tho secre tary, Mr. G. R. Hogan. The local military authorities have received instructions from headquarters at Wellington to dispatch to camp on Tuesday next 23 men, the strength of the shortage in the district's quota for the Eighteenth Reinforcements. The numbers required in the ■ different branches are one engineer, two infantry non-commissioned officers, and twenty infantry men. 'Die men are available, and will leave for camp by the midday express on Tuesday under Captain G. P. O'Sbannessy. TWENTY REGISTRATIONS. . NINE MEN ACCEPTED. There were 20 registrations at the city recruiting station up to two o'clock to-day since the "Star" we.nt to proas yesterday. Eight men were deferred and three rejected.
