COMPETITION ELIMINATED.
GOVERNMENT CONTROL OF SHIPS. SAVE MILLION AND A-HALP A YEAR. (Received 10.25 a.m.J MELBOURNE, this day. Under ■ the new scheme of naval control of shipping, the Naval Board is considering a proposal that all ships coming to Australia should call at one port only. Now that competition has been eliminated by Government control and the fixing of freights, it is urged that there is no necessity to call at more than one port. It is proposed to , organise ships so as to enable each port to be vißitcd in turn. Under this system it is estimated that each ship visiting Australia will save on an average 14 days a trip. As the cost of running a 5,0.00-. ton vessel is roughly £400 a day, it will annual saving of £1,500,000.
