The Auckland Mounted Rifles 'and the Auckland Mounted Signal Troop will go 1 into camp to Avondale on May 1, and I will continue their training till May !>• , Lieut.-Colonel Wynyard will be in command of the camp, and it is expected I that about 400 men will attend. The South Auckland Rifle Association's \ meeting at Waihi on Good Friday and ' the following day was a very successful affair. About ninety marksmen, from all parts of tho district turned up, and produced some keen finishes. A big proportion' v of them were tyros, who had 1 joined ritle clubs since the outbreak of ' war. ' One party of eight or nine came to the meeting from Waiuku. a district that had not been.. represented before. Allowing: for the fact that many of the ' competitors were men.who wc»c taking 1 on marksmanship rather late in. life, the shooting on the whole was very satisfac- • tory. In the five open matches the Taui marunui Rifles Club secured two firsts, > tbe Akarana Club two. and the Ohura Club one. The grand aggregate went to • Rifleman A. Olliver (Taumarunui). The ' town marksmen showed up best in the teams championship (Victoria Banner), . which was won by Akarana. with Auck- • land City second, and Taumarunui third. VARIOUS APPOINTMENTS.' MOTHERS AND SISTERS. ; Various people have remarked from ' time to time upon the handicap placed ' on single men who want to enlist, but ■ are in a difficulty over providing for ' persons dependent on them. While;the ( married man draws 1/ a day extra, with ■ a further allowance for each child up to four the single man draws the minimum, rate, no matter \ what - his. responsibilities may be: One. such man' called upon Captain Barclay.-honorary recruiting officer ut Wellington, the other day.-' Ha said that personally he wanted to enlist, but he was the sole support of his mother and sister, and he could not see how. they were going to exist on what he was able to leave them out of his 6/" a day. If he were a married man, . his course would be quite clear, as there . would, in addition to what lie ivar, able to leave them,. be a separation, allow- ' aiice for his wife and children, if he had ; any. but 'such concession. did not extend to his mother and sister. In commenting on the .case. Captain ; Barclay said that.a man so placed in ' France would not be allowed to enlist. But to their undying glory, the women [ of France had said: "Take every man, , and we will support ourselves upon one condition, and that,is that we will not ; be asked to pay rent during the war." To that the Government said,. "All right." Then the landlords had risen up, and said that if that was to be the , qase they could not pay the rates, and , again the Government had said, "All light!" And so the men had been rej leased all orcr the: country, to do the , country's most urgent task —to win the . : war!
