THE CEREAL CROP.

THRESHING RETURNS BELOW AVERAGE. (By Telecrash.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. Preliminary returns of threshing from the South Island have prepared the public for the prospect of a comparatively small yield, and the complete returns, I understand, will be available in a few days to bear this out. The yield is below average, but as the area put down in cereals this season was much in excess of that of the previous year, the gross yield will be at least equal to the New Zealand demand. Thus we ought to be free from the worry of high prices for bread during the coming winter.
