At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court a young man was charged with the theft of money exceeding £300, the property of Butterworth Bro3. Mr. H. S. Williams, manager of "the Christchurch branch, said that accused was a clerk in the local office of the firm. Up to the time of his arrest accused kept the receipt-book and the statement of a.ecounts. It was his duty to receive moneys, give receipts, and bank the money to the credit of the firm at Dunedin two or three times a week. He had been employed for two years and nine months. To Mr. Cassidy: Accused's salary was f 100 per year. He was responsible for the cash, and would handle about £10,000 to £12.000 a year.
