PATUMAHOE'S POST OFFICE.

PREMIER OPENS HEW BUILDING. DISTRICT'S PROGRESS. The new Patumahoe post office building, which has been erected in the thriving settlement midway between Pukekohe and Waiuku. at a cost of about j £1000, was formally opened yesterday! afternoon by the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. F. Massey). who is also member for the district. The township was in festive mood and apparel for the occasion, and the country folk for miles around flocked in to participate in the ceremony. The Prime Minister, who was accompanied by the Hon. Dr. Pomarc. was welcomed by the chairman of the Reception Committee (Mr. J. Henry), who read apologies for absence from several members of Parliament, after which brief addresses were delivered by Mr. J. Flanagan, chairman of the Franklin County Council, and Dr. Pomarc. Mr. Massey, who was greeted very heartily, discussed the great progress made by the Mauku district, of which Patumahoe is the centre, since it was first settled in 18.il, eight years after which it had its first post office, while in 1887 was erected the one which was now being superseded by the up-to-date and attractive structure he had been called ' u P° n to open. He pointed out the need of new quarters for the postal lousiness of the district from the fact tlrnt in the past five years the business hud increased about SO per cent. The Premier, after declaring the new office open for business, dispatched the first telegram from it to Wellington.
