GIFT BUTTER.
THE PROPOSAL UNDER WAY. With reference to the scheme for providing a consignment of gift butter for the troops in Egypt, suggested by Captain G. R. Hutchinson, the Mayor reports that the agents for a vessel leaving Wellington next week offered five tons of space for this purpose, hut owing to difficulties which could not be overcome —in the matter of a guarantee regarding cool storage and other points which were indefinite—the space was .not taken up. The Mayor is now communicating with the Minister for Defence in regard to apace by future freight boats, and is also sending circulars to the dairy companies to aecertain their view of the proposal. Mr. Gunson expresses the opinion that although from time to time the Government may eend a little butter, gift consignment-' to be distributed to the troops in addition to the ordinary rations would be most acceptable, and would afford further evidence that the boys at the front are not forgotten by those .eft behind. As soon as replie3 have been received from the dairy companies and shipping space has been obtained it is the intention of the Mayor to endeavour to give effect to the proposal. __ — m
