MR HUGHES' MISSION.
BACKED BY THE PEOPLE. " -• .. - -\. CO-ORDINATED POLICY WANTED. "* LONDON, March "l!>. In introducing the Premier of Australia (Mr W.M. Hughes) to the gathering of the Pilgrims' Club; Lord Bryce,; formerly British-Ambassador to-the-United States, who presided, said the constitution of the Empire ought not to remain " as. at' present. Much had been done in the past 20 months to bring the Dominions and the Mother Country closer together. "We only require to know each other better," declared Lord Bryce,. "and the waT has done much in this direction. We shall address ourselves to the task which is not" beyond the resources of those concerned, of framing a constitution. which._w.ili hold, the Empire, perfectly together, .and give the.Dominions a definitc_voice." The" "Observer" says Mr WT'-M. Hughes. Premier of Australia, should persevere. Britain i 3 far ahead of "the ' Government or Parliament, and an'ovcrwhelming majority in the country is with him. Neither Great Britain nor the Dominions want a centralised or rigil system. Both demand . a co-ordinated policy, making- the Empire a yital organism. Even. the. slow" minority "in JBritain are tnqgri; to . recognise.that 'some form of-federation is desirable.
