THE SINGLE STICKER

SHOULD HE BE VNGLtTED ? FROM HIS COMFY. BILLET? Detspite the earnest appeal made to him to realise his duty, tlie single man in the comfortable and well-paid job is in many instances still indisposed to leave it for the 6temer and less remunerative calling of the soldier, and a further appeal is made by the- chairman, of the Auckland Recruiting Committee (Mr. J. 11. Gunson) for the active help of the employer in bringing this self-satisfied young man to a sense of his obligations. '"There is no question that at thi6 time an appeal to the commercial firms of the community in regard to the position of the single man is urgently neccsaaTy." stated the Mayor to a "Star"' reporter this morning. "There is strong reason for believing that many single men have not gone who are well able to enlist. The time has arrived when single men should receive a clear intimation from their employers that it is up to them seriously to consider their duty.

"Returned men are arriving in large numbers. Many of these are married men, and the employment committee of the Patriotic Association will undertake to find in most cases competent men to take the places of single men who arc retired for failing to enlist. I have been asked by several people tn call a public meeting on this point- but I scarcely think flint it is necessary to £o to that length at the present time. I hope that this matter will receive the serious consideration of all employers, particularly of those in a laxge way of business."
