FRENCH LINER'S ESCAPE OFF TUNIS.
TORPEDO PASSES UNDER THE VESSEL'S STERN. NEW YORK, March 17. The French liner Patria. with 000 passengers aboard, from Palermo, reports that whilst she was passing the Tunisian coast a submarine fired a torpedo at her without warning. The torpedo passed 20ft astern of the liner. PERISCOPE SIGHTED BEFORE THE ATTACK. SHIP SAVED BY INCREASED * SPEED. (Received 2.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 17. , There were two thousand aboard the Patria, including' Mr. Olney, American Consul at Florence, twenty''other 'Americans, and' tnfee'mindred women. and an American saw the periscope of a submarine at a distance of 120 yards, and almost simultaneously observed the discharge of a torpedo. The engines were pat at full speed, and the ship saved. The Patria. a liner of 11.885 tons, was built in 1013, and is owned by the French Steam Navigation Company. Her port of registry is Marseilles.
