WORK FOR THE SOLDIERS.
WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC IEAGUE MEETS. GIFT SCHEME FORESHADOWED. The Mayoress (Mrs. J , . H. Gunson) presided over a meeting of the Auckland Women's Patriotic League, held in the Town Hall to-day. There was » large and enthusiastic attendance. Matters of organisation were considered at length, and various proposals for improving the work of the League were enthusiastically taken up by the members. Various new members were admitted, and were attached by various committees. The outline of a new scheme for sending gifts for the troops was placed before the meeting, and details of a big appeal .to be made to the public were arranged. Particulars of this will be published later, but it is understood that the basic idea ie for each person undertaking to help to make herself responsible monthly for the sending of one of several alternative gift parcels to be prescribed by the Association.
Hearty votes of thanks were accorded the pupils of Mies Basten's school for the large amount of typing they have undertaken on behalf of the League; to the Dominion, Auckland and New Zealand laundries for dyeing work in connection with the gifts; and to Messrs. Clark and Matheson for the gift of cards.
It was reported that in connection with the recent French Red Cross Society effort members of the League, by means of tlieir stall and subscription lists, had raised considerably over £100, The Mayoress and the secretary reported on the conference with Lady Liverpool, and on their visit to the camps, at Trentham and Fcathcreton, where the arrangements obtaining seemed to be entirely satisfactory. Requests from the Featherston, Trenthanv and Grcytown Hospitals, for winter comforts for the patients were considered, and arrangements made to make and forward the poods.
