WIDTH OF TYRES.

DAMAGE TO ROADS. PROPOSED NEW BY-LAW. A conference took place yesterday afternoon between the Works" Committee of the City CouncO and a deputation comprising representatives from various local bodies, regarding the question of the width of tyres, and the damage done to roads in tie Auckland district by vehicles fitted with narrow-tyred' wheels. Besides the members of the Works Committee there were representatives present from Newmarket, Mount Eden, Mount Devonport Borough Councils, and Epsom, One Tree Hill, Mount Roskill, and Point Chevalier Road Boards. Mr. P. J. Nerheny, chairman of the Works Committee, presided, and welcomed the vieitore. To Newmarket Council belongs the credit fo the suggestion tiiat fche following elates of vehicles should be provided with minimum "fridth tyres of 2£ inches, Spring cart drawn by one (horse, and carrying a load of lees than two tons, including the weight of the vehicle; spring cart, drawn with one or more horses, carrying a weight of two tons or more, 3 inches; dray drawn by one or more horses, 4A inches; four-Wheeled vans, drawn by two or more horses, 3£ inches; jiekers and timber wagons^ , drawn by two or more horses, 6 inches. It wae proposed that if such a by-law was adopted by all the local bodies it eboiild carry a penalty of £20 for noncompliance, and a fine not exceeding £5 per day where the breach was a continuous one.

Mr. J. McColl (Newmarket) explained that the tyres proposed could be fitted to vehicles in use at the present time. It might be, however, advisable that a clause should be inserted to meet the case of tradesmen's carts carrying a load of not more than op»» ton. He considered that if the City Council would pass euch a by-law, all that would toe required was to see that the renewal of licensee applied for should be subject to the new regulation in respect to the width of the tyres. Their object was to get the City Council to draft such a by-law, which could then be uniformly adopted l . The various representatives present supported the proposal, after w&ich Mr. ; Nerheny intimated that the matter ■would be considered by the committee, and a report would be sent to the Council, from which in due course communications would be forwarded to the various bodies interested.
