TRUE HUMILITY.

THE OBJECT OF WAR.

THROUGH SUFFERING TO UNDERSTANDING.

The second of a series of midday Lenten lecture* on "God's Discipline" was delivered in the Chamber of Commerce to-day by the Rev. A. H. Colvile.

Speaking of the relationship of national discipline to the will of God, the rev. gentleman said that God's discipline was always remedial rather than punitive. They should not regard the war as a punishment sent by God in retribution of past sins — punishment embodying a threat that if they did not crawl to God there was worse -to come. The object of the war was to bring the people to a more intense spirituality, deeper sacrifice, and higher and more satisfying, ideals for a larger and fuller life. 'Discipline, pain and humiliation were as necessary for the national self as for the individual. Why it should be so we did not know. But it was a fact that no one could fail to deny.

There was, however, the temptation to the false humiliation for the sake of petty interest and desires. The man who succumbed to that turned himself into a grizzling, growling pessimist, whereas true humiliation brought recollections of past sins, neglects and indifference, and ltivtrof'tyxt, which would fortify us in even greater misfortune.
