' : The half-yearly meeting of the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Catholic Federation was commenced this morning. Mr. D. L. Poppohvell, of Gore, president, occupied the chair. The fol- . lowing dciegates. were present:—Rev.. Father Coffey. Adm., Dunedin; Key. Dean Hyland and Rev. Father Kerloy, Christchurch: Rev. Dean Power. Rev. Father Hurley, Messrs. .7. J. L. Burke. J. . Duggan. W. F. Johnson, P. D. Hoskins, Wellington; Rev. Fathers W. J. Forde and J. Cahill. and Mr. P. E. Dromgool, Auckland. Archbishop O'Shea represented the hierarchy, aud letters of apology, expressing good wishes for the success of the meeting, were read from Archbishop Cerretti and Archbishop Redwood. In extending a welcome to his Grace and the visiting delegates, the president remarked that the most important event of the past six months had been the visit of the Papal Delegate to New Zealand. The occasion had been taken to express to his Holiness the Pope, through the delegate, the loyalty of the Catholic Federation. Mr. Poppelwell also referred to the consecration, of the Right Rev. Monsignor Brodie to the See of Christchurch. Thq excellent result-of the representative conference called by the federation on the film censorship question, and the promise given to a deputation wliich;subsequently waited on the Minister for Internal Affairs, that amending legislation would he introduced -.-next session, were matters for satisfaction. A scheme had been inaugurated for building a larger church hall at the new Featherston camp.. Catholics had done more than their share in providing soldiers for the Empire, and the roll of . honour now being compiled would show that a great many names of Catholics j appeared in the casualty lists. Archbishop O'Shea congratulated the council on the work accomplished in the past six months. Excellent reports of work done hy the. . .diocesan councils and branches in the ; "four dioceses were read, and showed a steady increase of membership and much social work inaugurated. A feature of the work in Christchurch and Wellington was the establishment of hostels for Catholic women obliged to live away •jfrom home and travelling. " It was hoped - shortly- to have such a hostel in each of the principal centres.
