INTERMITTENT ARTILLERY FIRE

BRITAIN'S RESOURCES

THE NEED FOR CONSERVATION

NATIONAL ECONOMY LEAGUE FORMED

The attack on Verdun is still being maintained, but the latest reports do not indicate any further progress on the part of the enemy. The heaviest line of attack has apparently shifted from the north to the east, but this has caused the French no concern, and they believe that the enemy is even less likely to advance here than along the front. Details of the struggle for Douaumont still trickling through accentuate the horrors of the struggle and the losses of the enemy. The French counter-attack on the fort took the Germans by surprise, and they lost heavily before effectively fighting back. The fighting to the north of Verdun has been confined to the artillery, and has been intermittent, while greater energy has been thrown into the campaign on the eastward side. In the Champagne the fighting has also become livelier, and it is suggested that the Germans are seeking by these new actions to divert the attention of their people from their failure at Verdun. A League of National Economy was inaugurated at the Guildhall yesterday, when impressive speeches were delivered on the necessity of abandoning all non-essentials in food, clothing and so on, in order that every available man may be freed to fight with the Army in the field or to work with the civilian army to keep up munitions and supplies. Members of the Italian Chamber of Deputies are urging the Government to declare war against Germany.
