LOCAL BODIES.

KEWMAKKET. At the meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council, held last night, there were present: Messrs. J. McColl (mayor), A Seccombe. H. .T. Cooper, P. S. Boone, W. H. Hamlin, C. Leek. S. Donaldson, F. J. O'Ueara, and W. Wade. "Weighbridge. —Owing to several complaints being received in connection with the state of the weighbridge, it was .decided that the work of forming np the road level with the bridge be proceeded witi. Cheaper Water.—A request was received from Hancock and Company for a reductlop in the price of water. The request added that the water was used largely for bottle washing. The matter was deferred nntil the 31st inst.; pending an attempt by the Borongh -Conncil for a reduction of the City Council's present charge. Narrow Tyres.—A letter was received from the Town Clerk, complaining of the damage done to the borough streets by heavy vehicles with narrow tyres-. He suggested that as the matter was one which concerned all local bodies and also the City Council, a conference should be convened to discuss the matter. Councillor Seccombe stated that fifteen years ago the compulsory use of 4in tyres by heavily laden vehicles was mooted. However no practical endeavour had yet been made to put the suggestion Into force. He thought that the present time was most opportune for framing a by-law In respect to the nuisance. It was resolved that the Town Clerk get into touch with various local bodies and the City Conncil for the purpose of holding a conference. Inadequate Tram Accommodation. — A letter was received from tbe general manager of the Auckland Electric Tramways Company, stating that steps were being taken -for an improved car service In -Newmarket, in .view of --the large -lumber of Grammar .School students. It. was- resolved to ask the Tramways -Company for a time-table, to be approved by the Council. Fire Hose.—lt was resolved to purchase 500 yds of ,_ire bose, as the captain of the local Fire Brigade informed the Council that it would shortly rise considerably in price. ELLERSLIE. The fortnightly meeting of Ellerslie Town Board was held on Wednesday. Present: : Mr. W. H. Gavin, .chairman, and Messrs. G. Thorpe, S. Some-field, and F. B. Bust. Tarripg. —It was decided to complete the tarring of the footpaths in Panmure Road, llorrin Street, Ladies' Mile, and .Russell Crescent, and to procure ten casks of distilled tar for the work. Nuisances.—Complaints were received in regard to the state of various manure heaps in the district, and the Nuisance Inspector was instructed to make a houseto house visit, and wherever a nuisance existed to give notice of immediate removal of same. Health Offleer. — Dr. Hughes is to be . advised that none of his recommendations - In reference to shops in Ellerslie has been attended to. and he is to take further ft action to compel them to be carried out. Jj Storage of Benzine. — The clerk was | instructed to procure a copy of the City £ Conncil by-law In regard to provisions | required before dangerous goods could be p stored in bulk. _ Panmure .Eoad. —It was resolved that the S offer of the Bituco Road Binder Company I to give an additional coat of Bituco, 18ft I wide, in the centre of the Panmure Road, | for £40. be accepted, the company to pro- | -vide Bituco and chips, and to signify . consent in writing. (J Breach of .By-lawe;—The Board's soliictor ias been Instructed to take proceedings against the Auckland Farmers' Milk Supply Company for building a stable and carrshed without a permit, and in contravention of the by-laws. : Slot Telephone.—The Telegraph Engineer ' wrote, advising the Board that, as BUerslle ( was 5} miles away from the central office, the distance was too great for the working of a slot machine. Mr. Bnst was instructed to interview the Telegraph Engineer. Government Sewer.—lt was decided to , erect six vents in the Government sewer, < the Drainage Inspector to prepare au I estimate of the cost for the nest meeting | of the Works Committee. Miscellaneous- — Inspector Alder wrote, asking the Board to erect a drinkng j trough at Penrose. The members were I favourably disposed towards granting tbe request, though it was felt that the Onetree Hill Road Board and the Railway " Department might as easily have heen approached. The clerk was instructed to obtain prices for concrete and iron trougbs. Three building permits were issued. A tender of £S 15/ for painting the Fire Brigade shed and Board's office was accepted. j.
