TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.".; CHRISTCHIIRCn, Tuesday. The near approach of the Akaroa County Racing Club's meeting is causing the flic carton trainers to keep their charges busy. On Saturday the outside of the trial grass was open, as well as the plough and tan, most of the .work being done on the grass, which iwas In nice order after the rain which fell over-night. ■Snapdragon galloped nine furlongs in t-6 2-6 without unduly hurrying herself.. Te Anau. on the tau, took 1.8 over five furlongs. 'Subterfuge ran six furlongs, the last five In 1.7. Bdre was going comfortably over a mile and a-quarter, whkb occupied 2.24. Chrysotis -was too good for Martuk at the end of a mile and a-quarter. She finished well In 2.11 1-5, 'Martuk stopping over the last bit. Briar Patch easily beat Don Francisco and Red Knight over six furlougs In 1.119, o distance which Glentanner covered alone In 1.18. Tipup beat Flrmhold over half a mile lv 51s. After breakfast Caber Davon, with a light weight up, ran seven furlongs on the tau In 1.32 2-6. The Cornet, assisted by Slogan over the last six furlongs, covered a mi:" In 1.40, while Bandy, with Glenowl as !•. companion part of the way, ran six furlongs in I.IJ. Free ('\V. .Scoble) and F. Christmas' Sir Laddo gelding (B. iJlcSevcney) were, schooled twice over the two pony hurdles.. Free jumped well, but her companion ran of at the second obstacle each tlmei though he subsequently cleared it In hue style by himself. The conditions were very pleasant for training operations at ltlccartou this morning. Horses with engagements at the Akaroa County meeting were stretched out, and the work was fairly Interesting. Most of It was done on the plough, though the tan was also open. Snapdragon had a slight advantage over Comely at the' end of a mile, which occuI pled 1.40. Swale was going comfortably alongside Aire while running half a mile In 00 l-ss. Subterfuge and Battle Eve i covered five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, while I'etruchlo, .'insisted by Wiuterbourue over the last three furlongs, left half a mile behind In 50s. Veritas and Cosy Corner ran six furlongs in 1.10. Majestlkoff appeared to be doing her best at the end of a similar Journey with Bore, the time being 1.19 4-0. Briar Patch, with Tipup to assist her over the last half-inlle, ran six furlongs in , 1.16 1-5, a good, gallop,, which Martuk I equalled by herself. - - : '"- Horahlkl got over Aye fnrlongs in 1.5 4-5. Wardancer ran half a mile In 50s, Disdainful accompanying him over the last part. Chrysotis. assisted by Glentanner over tho last live furlongs, covered seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5. Dandy hit out well In a strong gallop over a mile .with an unnamed Sir Laddo gelding to bring him home over the last half. After breakfast Peronllla, accompanied by Forest Belle over the last half-mile, ran six furlougs In 1.17 3si. Caher Davon strode •freely over a mJle and a-quartcr on the ton, which he ran In 2.13 1-3, Bonnie Boncbc Joining In over the lost Aye furlongs. .._ Cnntertjirv,j ..aMt'X^yßDßf"red sore, .»prlntcd.yta<Ur.,»,*iin&..lu..32»rt-*Aycllire got a break from Fiery Cross and •Trcadflrc, but Flory Crofs Just caught him at the end of half a mile, which occupied 525, Treadflrc being beaten off. ilclford took 61 3-5s over naif a mile. ■* -■--■<•• - Peg and Keval were together at the end of six furlongs, which they covered. In 1.16, Glenowl covering a similar Journey alone In 1.10. There nave been Inquiries recently after Silent Way, and It Is probable that he will leave lUccarton. -where he has ecen trained for all his engagements by W. McDonald.. Mr. J. Grlgg. the owner of tbe Calibre gelf'. log, is on the eve of leaving for Englanu, wrdch doubtless accounts for the willingness to sell. Silent Way bos done exceptionally well, as he has not. becu long In training, and -may develop Into a really good horse with, time His public -efforts suggest that he may turn out a stayer. First Glance bos. run her hurt race, and she will be sent home this week, with a view to taking up 'stud life next season. The Irish mare showed a good turn of Bpeed the first time she appeared in public, and was-soon picked out as'-Ukely to do credit to her-, .owner. In her early days she was kept -to-sprinting, but during the last two seasons Ac has been!' raced over longer Journeys, with very satisfactory results, as she has won''up to a.mile and a half. She was probably at tier best, however, at about a mile, over which course she was very little short of the highest form in tbe Dominion. Galloping seemed to be no effort to First Glance, •which had' an easy and attractive style of getting over the ground, and though It is a matter for regret that such a fine mare Is how off the scene she should prove a valuable asset at the stud. ' • The local trainer W. McDonald has been very successful with his small team for some rime past now, but his Immediate prospects do uot look particularly bright. With First Glance retired, Silent Wey under offer for sole, and Tcvlotdale broken down, he Is left with Meltchlkoff and Moddlte, both of which arc' well up In the weights at present. Madrid has been sent home to her owner's station, but F. D. Jones expects to have Medley and Bomb baJfe In work again in a few days, so that Mr. H. A. Knight will have a useful team to represent him later on, especially If Bore continues to Improve as he has done lately. Mr. G. B. Starky's imported marc Week End has been thrown out of work, and will be sent home for a spell. She has given her trainer a lot of trouble through lameness, w-bich 'has been Unally located In the knee, but It Is 'hoped that she will be all right again after a few months' rest. Bandy has left Coker's stable, and Is now being trained by his owner, fie is In nice fettle at present, so may not be long before he scores a win. The Cornet' gelding Salathlel, which has had a spell for about a year, during which time be has becu running out on a station In iNorth Canterbury, Is to be brought In again, and another effort iwlll be made to get him ready for hurdle races, lie has done well during his rest, but If he shows any further signs of unsoundness will not be further .persevered with. Mr. J. A. Holmes has grown tired ot [Reveller, which has failed to shape up to early expectations, and the Nautlfonn geldhas been thrown out of work. AUSTRALIAN RACING.
