HAND-TO-HAND FIGHTING NEAR DOUAUMONT

A French communique states:—"North of Verdun the activity of the German artillery is still great, except west of the Meuse, where there is a slackening. The' Germans attempted partial attacks, but our fire and counter-attacks drove them back. Wo have been engaged in hand-to-hand fighting west of Douaumont, and have driven the enemy out of a small redoubt, where ho had established himself. Two enemy attacks on the Fresnes-Woevre sector completely failed. "A German regiment has been surrounded at Douaumont."
