The sale in Wellington of standing timber conducted by the Commissioner of Crown Lands this week offers further evidence of the steadily growing value of our standing timbers (says the "New Zealand Times" j. The timber stands on an. area of 734 acres, situated about a Triile east of the Ohakune>ailway~statipn. It amounted- to a total of 13,303,500 super feet, consisting of mainly rimu and rniro' 11,239,700 feet, and also.'jnatai 1,773,800 and kabikatea 290,000 super feet. This is equal to an average of, approximately, 20.000 super feet to the acre. The upset price was fixed at £7466, equal to about 2/ per 100 super feet' for matai and 1/ per 100 super- feet for the xirnu and miro. After, some spirited burding the right tf> cut and remove this timber -was sold to Messrs Goldfinch and Co., sawmillers, of Ohakune, fpr the sum of £14,500—that is.-just double the upset price, realising *hus about .2/ per 100 super feet log 'measurement.for"the.rimu and miro, and 4/ per 100 feet for the matai. In addition, the timber was loaded with 1,047 12/0, the cost of the railway siding giving access to the area. The chief reason for the high prices realised is the accessibility of the timber and comparatively small cost at which it. can be worked. The land has a natural slope towards the railway siding.
